System Requirements for NJT Software

All NJT software is developed using Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). The 'VAT Return Manager' and 'Digital Records' software resides in a Microsoft Excel workbook. The 'Tax Return Manager' software resides in a 'front-end' Microsoft Access database (stored on your local computer) and a separate backend database (stored locally or on a network drive).

All NJT software is designed to run within it's own folder as specific sub folders are created automatically when the software opens. Therefore before downloading the software, create a folder within your local drive or a shared network drive.

Although, all NJT software is digitally signed by an independant authority, you will first need to add this folder location to the list of 'Trusted locations' via the 'Trust Centre Settings', which can be found by clicking on the 'File' menu then 'Options'.

Also within the 'Tust Centre Settings', you will need to tick the box 'Trust Access to the VBA project object model'. This is because Microsoft now set this box to blank (as default) when installing new versions of Office.

Also your computer needs to be connected to the internet with a recommended minimum download speed of 10 mbs.

All NJT software is compatible with the following computer operating systems:

  • Microsoft Windows (Microsoft supported versions only) i.e. Version 10 onwards
  • Apple Mac Computers running 'Parallels Desktop'

All NJT software is compatible with the following Microsoft Office applications:

  • For the 'VAT Return Manager' and 'Digital Records' - Microsoft Office/Excel (Microsoft supported version only) i.e. Version 2013 onwards
  • For the 'Tax Return Manager' - Microsoft Office/Access (Microsoft supported version only) i.e. Version 2016 onwards. If your version of Office does not include 'Access' you can download a free 'Run-time' version from Microsoft.

All NJT software is Not compatible with 'OpenOffice' or 'LibreOffice' as these applications do not contain all the functionality required by the NJT software.

Microsoft 'End of Support' Dates

When Microsoft products reach their 'End of Support' dates, they are no longer supported and do not receive security updates. It is therefore recommended that you upgrade to later products before these dates.

Windows

  • Windows 7 - 14th January 2020

  • Windows 8.1 - 10th January 2023

  • Windows 10 - 14th October 2025

Office

  • Office 2007 - 10th October 2017

  • Office 2010 - 13th October 2020

  • Office 2013 - 11th April 2023

  • Office 2016 & 2019 - 14th October 2025

OneDrive 'File Sharing' Service

  • Foremost, OneDrive is a 'File Sharing' service, not a authentic 'File Server'. OneDrive is designed for synchronising or real-time collaboration of single files, for example, Pictures and simple documents.
OneDrive is not designed for Database applications like the NJT software, therefore it is recommended that the NJT software is located outside OneDrive.
  • Although, under certain conditions, the NJT software may run, you may encounter synchronisation issues as the NJT software actively creates and updates files located within the pre-defined sub-folders.
  • For information, Within older OneDrive installations, options called 'File Collaboration' and 'Files On-Demand' were available, which when turned off, enabled the NJT software to open correctly, as it forced your files to be stored on your local computer.
However, Microsoft has significantly changed the way OneDrive works and all files are now accessed directly from the OneDrive cloud website.
Also, Microsoft has now removed the above options.
  • Note: Where older versions of OneDrive were installed and the above options were already turned off, recent OneDrive updates have allowed these options to be retained.
Therefore, you should be unaffected. Although it not known how long this will continue.
  • For clarity, all new installations of OneDrive will never display the above options. Therefore, the NJT software will NOT function correctly whilst OneDrive is active.
Although as described above, OneDrive is not the correct location for applications, you can adopt a 'Workaround' by Pausing or closing OneDrive before you open the NJT software (See below for instructions).

Workaround for New OneDrive Installations

  1. First make sure OneDrive is active and the NJT software is closed.
  2. Within your Windows 'File Explorer':
    1. Navigate to the Folder that contains the NJT Software
    2. Right Click on the Folder Name
    3. Then Click on 'Always Keep on this Device' (The icon in the 'Status' column should change to a White tick in a Green circle).
  3. Pause OneDrive (for example '2 Hours'):
    1. Click on the OneDrive 'Cloud' icon (Normally bottom right of your Windows screen)
    2. Click on the 'Gear' icon
    2. Select 'Pause Syncing' then select (for example '2 Hours')
Alternatively, you could Quit OneDrive, whilst using the NJT software
  4. Open the NJT software.
  5. When you have completed your work and closed the NJT software, you can reverse the OneDrive 'Pause Syncing'.

There is an outstanding defect in DropBox that affects certain installations of Microsoft Office.

Symptom
Within the NJT software, when you click on the 'Save & Close' button, you are prompted to 'Enter a Password' and Excel/Access freezes.

Solution
Within DropBox:

  1. Click on the 'Gear' icon.
  2. Then select 'Preferences'.
  3. Change the 'DropBox Badge' setting to 'Never Show'.
  4. Click 'Apply'.
  5. Click 'OK'.

  • In July 2020, a new version of Bit Defender was released, which may now display incorrect error messages and prevent the NJT software from operating.

You may receive error messages as follows:
"Infected web resource detected" to https://neilsonjamestech.co.uk as accessed by EXCEL.EXE
"Infected web page detected" at https://neilsonjamestech.co.uk"

  • For information, the NJT Website is a secure website with a valid certificate. All NJT software is virus scanned using Windows Security, Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware before release. Additionally, the NJT software operates normally on computers protected by other 'main stream' Antivirus/AntiMalware solutions.
It appears that Bit Defender simply does not like Excel applications directly accessing the Internet via embedded software. Which of course is the intended purpose of the NJT software.

How to Resolve the Issue

  1. Open the Bit Defender Console
  2. Under "Online Threat Prevention" - Manage Exceptions
    Add "https://neilsonjamestech.co.uk"
  3. Then save the configuration.

  • During April 2023, Kaspersky started to quarantine the NJT software. All recent NJT versions were submitted to the Kaspersky Labs in Moscow. On each occasion, Kaspersky confirmed that it was a 'False Detection' and promised to fix their virus detection lists.
Additionally, a separate message is now being displayed stating that the software contains suspicious content. This is actually because the software sends and receives data from the HMRC and NJT websites.
It appears that Kaspersky simply does not like Excel applications directly accessing the Internet via embedded software. Which of course is the intended purpose of the NJT MTD software. Additionally, Kaspersky, after a short delay, continues to trigger 'False Detections', after fixing the virus list for that software specific version.

How to Resolve the Issue
Note: the location of the following settings may vary depending on the version.

  1. Open Kaspersky, then navigate to Settings (the Cog icon)
  2. Within 'Manage Exclusions', add the Folder path that contains the NJT software (E.g. C:\My VAT Returns). Choose 'All Components'.
  3. Within Trusted URL's or Trusted Addresses, Add https://neilsonjamestech.co.uk/*
  4. Then save the configuration.
  5. Restore the NJT software from the Quarantine.
