All NJT software is developed using Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA).
The 'VAT Return Manager' and 'Digital Records' software resides in a Microsoft Excel workbook.
The 'Tax Return Manager' software resides in a 'front-end' Microsoft Access database (stored on your local computer) and a separate backend database (stored locally or on a network drive).
All NJT software is designed to run within it's own folder as specific sub folders are created automatically when the software opens.
Therefore before downloading the software, create a folder within your local drive or a shared network drive.
Although, all NJT software is digitally signed by an independant authority, you will first need to add this folder location to the list of 'Trusted locations' via the 'Trust Centre Settings',
which can be found by clicking on the 'File' menu then 'Options'.
Also within the 'Tust Centre Settings', you will need to tick the box 'Trust Access to the VBA project object model'. This is because Microsoft now set this box to blank (as default) when
installing new versions of Office.
Also your computer needs to be connected to the internet with a recommended minimum download speed of 10 mbs.
Click on the individual Title to view the details.
All NJT software is compatible with the following computer operating systems:
Microsoft Windows (Microsoft supported versions only) i.e. Version 10 onwards
Apple Mac Computers running 'Parallels Desktop'
All NJT software is compatible with the following Microsoft Office applications:
For the 'VAT Return Manager' and 'Digital Records' - Microsoft Office/Excel (Microsoft supported version only) i.e. Version 2013 onwards
For the 'Tax Return Manager' - Microsoft Office/Access (Microsoft supported version only) i.e. Version 2016 onwards.
If your version of Office does not include 'Access' you can download a free 'Run-time' version from Microsoft.
All NJT software is Not compatible with 'OpenOffice' or 'LibreOffice' as these applications do not contain all the functionality required by the NJT software.
Microsoft 'End of Support' Dates
When Microsoft products reach their 'End of Support' dates, they are no longer supported and do not receive security updates.
It is therefore recommended that you upgrade to later products before these dates.

OneDrive is designed for synchronising or real-time collaboration of single files, for example Excel workbooks.
OneDrive is not designed for applications like the NJT software, therefore it is recommended that, if possible, you locate the NJT software outside OneDrive.
Although the NJT software may run, you may encounter synchronisation issues as the NJT software actively creates and updates files located within
the pre-defined sub-folders.
Where OneDrive is configured to 'Collaborate on documents in real time', all files are accessed directly from the OneDrive cloud website.
I.e. the folder location starts with 'https://'.
As a result, the NJT software will not function correctly as it does not have the necessary permissions to maintain files and folders.
How to Remove the 'Collaborate on documents in real time' setting within OneDrive
Close the NJT software where loaded.
Within OneDrive, click on 'Gear' icon.
Click on 'Settings'.
Within the 'Sync and Backup' / 'Advanced Settings' section:
Set the 'File Collaboration' button to 'Off'.
Note: You may need to close then open OneDrive.
Open the NJT software.
There is an outstanding defect in DropBox that affects certain installations of Microsoft Office.
Symptom
Within the NJT software, when you click on the 'Save & Close' button, you are prompted to 'Enter a Password'
and Excel/Access freezes.
Solution
Within DropBox:
Click on the 'Gear' icon.
Then select 'Preferences'.
Change the 'DropBox Badge' setting to 'Never Show'.
Click 'Apply'.
Click 'OK'.
In July 2020, a new version of Bit Defender was released, which may now display incorrect error messages and prevent the NJT software from operating.
You may receive error messages as follows:
"Infected web resource detected" to https://neilsonjamestech.co.uk as accessed by EXCEL.EXE
"Infected web page detected" at https://neilsonjamestech.co.uk"
For information, the NJT Website is a secure website with a valid certificate. All NJT software is virus scanned using Windows Security, Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware
before release. Additionally, the NJT software operates normally on computers protected by other 'main stream' Antivirus/AntiMalware solutions.
It appears that Bit Defender simply does not like Excel applications directly accessing the Internet via embedded software. Which of course is the intended purpose of the NJT software.
How to Resolve the Issue
Open the Bit Defender Console
Under "Online Threat Prevention" - Manage Exceptions Add "https://neilsonjamestech.co.uk"
Then save the configuration.
During April 2023, Kaspersky started to quarantine the NJT software.
All recent NJT versions were submitted to the Kaspersky Labs in Moscow.
On each occasion, Kaspersky confirmed that it was a 'False Detection' and promised to fix their virus detection lists.
Additionally, a separate message is now being displayed stating that the software contains suspicious content.
This is actually because the software sends and receives data from the HMRC and NJT websites.
It appears that Kaspersky simply does not like Excel applications directly accessing the Internet via embedded software. Which of course is the intended purpose of the NJT MTD software.
Additionally, Kaspersky, after a short delay, continues to trigger 'False Detections', after fixing the virus list for that software specific version.
How to Resolve the Issue Note: the location of the following settings may vary depending on the version.
Open Kaspersky, then navigate to Settings (the Cog icon)
Within 'Manage Exclusions', add the Folder path that contains the NJT software (E.g. C:\My VAT Returns). Choose 'All Components'.
Within Trusted URL's or Trusted Addresses, Add https://neilsonjamestech.co.uk/*
