How to Purchase (Individuals or Businesses)
Although HMRC may suggest that you purchase the software before signing up to 'MTD for Income Tax',
if you don't signup first, the use of the software will be very limited.
This is because, when you first use the software, you need to 'Give Permision' (Formerly called 'Grant Authority') using your HMRC Business/Personal Tax account.
Meaning that the software cannot communicate with the HMRC MTD system until you have given permission.
Therefore you may wish to check your eligibility before purchasing the software.

The software you download is actually a 'Live Evaluation' version and is upgraded to a licensed version,
by purchasing a software licence and then entering an 'Activation' Key. This then allows you to submit 'Quarterly Updates'.

Try the Free 'Demonstration' Software
It is recommended that, before purchasing the 'Live' software, you first try the free Demonstration for the following reasons:

Proves that the NJT software actually works on your computer.

Proves that you can digitally import 'VAT Returns' and/or 'Quarterly Updates' into the software.

Familiarises yourself with the new processes & terminology.

Where required, signup to Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (via the HMRC website)

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (Sole Traders & Property Landlords): Step by Step.
On the HMRC website, read the instructions, then scroll down and click on the link 'Sign up Now'.
During the sign up process you will sign into your existing HMRC Business/Personal Tax account.

Download & install the 'Live' Software
Click on the following links to download and install the 'Tax Return Manager'.
Then return to this page and continue at the next step.

'Live' Software Initial Setup
- Open the 'Live' Software
- The 'Welcome' window will be displayed, then click on the 'Continue' button.
- The 'User Guide' window will be displayed, then click on the 'Close' button.

Click on the Red 'Terms of Use' button, Read the 'Terms of Use' & 'Privacy Notice'
carefully then click on the 'Accept' button.
- Add your Taxpayer record. Enter your Name or Business Name and your National Insurance No (NINO) (Note: Also set the 'HMRC Account Type' to 'Taxpayer')
- Click on the 'Save & Close' button.
Note: If the software is not working as expected, re-visit the installation instructions.

Purchase your Software Licence & Activate the 'Live' Software

Note: If you are VAT registered, your VAT Registration Number will be used as your Licence Number.
If you are Not VAT registrered, a Licence Number will be calculated for you.

You will then receive an 'Order Confirmation' email containing:
- Your Licence Number
- Your Activation Key
- Invoice, which includes the NJT Bank details to facilitate electronic payment
Note 1: If you are unable to make an electronic Bank payment then please telephone NJT
to discuss an alternative method.
Note 2: To avoid this email being deposited in your 'Junk/Spam' folder, please add

Open the 'Live' software.
- Then click the 'Purchase Licence' button on the Dashboard.
- Enter your (Name or Business Name) and Licence Number.
- Select your chosen Licence Type.
- Enter the Activation Key and click 'Activate'.

'Live' Software (Check that your signup to MTD has completed)

Give Permission for the NJT software to interact with HMRC.
- Click on the 'Give Permission' button, then follow the instructions.

Attempt to retrieve the VAT and/or Income Tax obligations from HMRC.
- For VAT, click on the 'Retrieve Obligation' button, then follow the instructions.
- For Income Tax, the obligations should be retrieved automatically when 'Income Tax' tab is visible.

- Code 403 'CLIENT_OR_AGENT_NOT_AUTHORISED'
- Code 500 'INTERNAL_SERVER_ERROR'
- No 'Open' obligations were found for the requested date range ....
